Latest News: French Minister Supports Iranian People: Military Intervention is Not the First Option

French Armed Forces Minister Alice Rufo said military intervention in Iran was not France’s first option. The threat of military intervention by the United States (US) emerged with Iranian authorities launching a brutal crackdown on demonstrators that killed thousands of people.
“I think we have to support the Iranian people in whatever way we can,” said Alice Rufo in the political broadcast ‘Le Grand Jury’ reported AFPMonday (26/1/2025).
However, “military intervention is not the first option” for France, he said, adding that “it is up to the Iranian people to get rid of this regime”.

Rufo lamented how difficult it has been to document the mass crimes the Iranian regime has committed against its population due to widespread internet blackouts.
Iran’s more than 90 million residents have been largely cut off from the internet since authorities imposed a blackout on Jan. 8 amid massive protests sweeping the country.
Under the cover of a power outage, they launched a crackdown on demonstrators, with human rights groups documenting several thousand dead and the Norway-based NGO Iran Human Rights saying the final figure could reach more than 25,000.

Iran’s government has put the death toll at 3,117, including 2,427 it calls martyrs, a term used to distinguish innocent members of the security forces and civilians from those described by authorities as rioters claimed to be incited by the US and Israel.
“The Iranian people reject their regime. The fate of the Iranian people belongs to the Iranian people themselves, and it is not our job to choose their leaders,” said Rufo.

US President Donald Trump has repeatedly threatened to launch a military strike against Iran in response to the crackdown, but has since appeared to have walked back the threat after he said Tehran was suspending planned executions.
Protests sparked by economic grievances erupted in Tehran on December 28, 2025, but turned into a mass movement demanding the removal of the clerical system that has ruled Iran since the 1979 revolution.
