The title of National Hero to Suharto, Ahmad Muzani said was a good thing

FAJAR.CO.ID, JAKARTA — Chairman of the Indonesian People’s Consultative Assembly, Ahmad Muzani, spoke out regarding the awarding of the title of National Hero to the Second President of the Republic of Indonesia, Soeharto, to coincide with National Heroes’ Day on Monday (10/11).

It is known that giving the title of national hero to Suharto had many pros and cons. For activists, they firmly reject the title of National Hero given to Suharto for various reasons of past sins.

Regarding the title of National Hero for Suharto, Ahmad Musani considers giving this title a good tradition from President Prabowo Subianto to previous leaders.

Ahmad Muzani did not deny that leaders, including Suharto, had made mistakes. However, the Gerindra Party politician asked the public to remember the kindness and services of previous leaders.

“I think traditions like this are very good, from juniors to seniors, from children to their fathers,” said Ahmad Muzani, Monday (10/11).

Ahmad Muzani said all legal processes addressed to Suharto had been completed. “Mr Soeharto has undergone legal processes, both criminal and civil,” said Ahmad Muzani.

According to Ahmad Muzani, there were no obstacles for the government to designate Suharto as a national hero.

“The MPR believes that there is no obstacle for the government to give awards to someone who is considered to have provided great services in life to the nation and state, including Suharto,” continued Muzani.

Previously, President Prabowo awarded Suharto as a national hero as stipulated in Presidential Decree (Keppres) Number 116/TK/Year 2025 concerning the Award of the Title of National Hero.
