Observer: The South Sulawesi Provincial Government’s attitude regarding the expansion of Luwu Raya is appropriate and proportional

FAJAR.CO.ID, MAKASSAR – The discourse on expanding Luwu Raya into a province continues to be in the spotlight in the public sphere. Political observer from Hasanuddin University (Unhas), Prof. Armin Arsyad, assesses that the attitude of the South Sulawesi Provincial Government (Pemprov Sulsel) so far has been in the corridor of applicable rules and authority.

According to him, administratively, the South Sulawesi Provincial Government has actually completed the prerequisites for the formation of the Central Luwu New Autonomous Region (DOB) since 2012. After these stages have been completed at the provincial level, the next process is completely under the authority of the central government.

“The South Sulawesi Provincial Government has completed all the administrative prerequisites for the formation of the Central Luwu Special Region since 2012. This means that in terms of documents and procedures at the provincial level, it has been completed. After that, the authority lies with the central government and the DPR RI,” said Prof Armin, Thursday (12/2/2026).

This professor at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) Unhas added that, logically, the central government also does not need to use the term new autonomous region moratorium in the future. “This is input for the central government, not to put a moratorium on it but to tighten the formation of new autonomous regions,” he added.

“If you are asked to start over from zero now, it will actually take longer. Even though administratively it has already been processed and submitted. What is needed now is policy certainty at the central level,” he explained.

Apart from administrative aspects, Prof Armin also emphasized the importance of the principle of inter-regional justice. He reminded that many other regions in Indonesia had previously proposed expansion and were still waiting for a decision.
