Latest News: PPPA Minister Appreciates Menpora, Encourages Violence-Free Sports

The Ministry of Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection (KemenPPPA) appreciates the quick steps taken by the Indonesian Minister of Youth and Sports (Menpora) Erick Thohir. This appreciation was conveyed for Erick’s actions in responding to cases of sexual harassment and physical violence experienced by Indonesian rock climbing athletes.
This was conveyed directly by PPPA Minister Arifah Fauzi. Arifah expressed deep concern and empathy for the case of sexual violence experienced by a rock climbing athlete.
“We appreciate the quick and responsive steps from the Ministry of Youth and Sports in responding to this alleged case. The swift initial response is an important form of commitment in ensuring the protection of athletes, as well as creating a sports environment that is safe, dignified and free from violence,” said Arifah, in a written statement, Monday (2/3/2026).
KemenPPPA emphasized that victims must be placed at the center of every handling process.
“We encourage victims to receive comprehensive assistance ranging from psychological, medical, to legal assistance, as well as protection from all forms of pressure, intimidation and stigma,” stressed Arifah.
“We also emphasize the importance of handling this case professionally, transparently and fairly. In accordance with applicable laws and regulations, especially Law Number 12 of 2022 concerning criminal acts of sexual violence. The legal process must proceed without tolerance towards the perpetrator, while ensuring the confidentiality and safety of the victim,” he added.
KemenPPPA will coordinate with the Ministry of Youth and Sports, and related Ministries/Institutions (K/L), Law Enforcement Officials, and Sports Organizations to ensure that this case is handled seriously, as well as encourage strengthening the system for preventing sexual violence in the sports environment.

Including through athlete protection policies, safe complaint mechanisms, and education about power relations.
“We invite all parties not to spread information that could hurt victims, and to respect the ongoing legal process. The state is here to ensure that every woman and child, including athletes, are protected from violence and receive justice,” he concluded.
